k05_20518539An average of 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that there were 19 flash floods in Northern Mindanao, Davao, Socsksargen and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao from May 31 to June 19 this year.

But Metro Manila and other areas in the country have had its share of severe flooding.

Tropical storm “Ondoy” brings massive floods to Metro Manila and neighboring provinces that killed more than 464 people, with 529 injured and 37 missing.

Eight days after Ondoy, typhoon Òpepengó lashes the Northern part of Luzon, leaving 465 dead, 207 injured and 47 missing.

Typhoon “Santi” leaves 20 people dead, mostly from drowning, in six provinces in Southern Luzon and the Bicol region. Four people were missing.

The death toll from typhoon “Basyang” reaches 102, with 91 injured in Central Luzon, Calabarzon and the Bicol region.

Typhoon “Juan” kills at least 31 people, injured 42 and left four missing in Regions I, II, III, IV-A, NCR and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). The super typhoon left massive crop destruction in northern Luzon.

21 people are killed, 66 are injured after severe floods caused by a low-pressure area hit parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

A total of 12 people drown and 135,921 families or 703,199 persons are affected by floods that hit 575 villages in 59 municipalities in the four regions in Mindanao.

The death toll in the flash floods that struck Davao City reaches 30, with one missing. The NDRRMC reported that 24, 471 families or 113,115 persons were affected by the floods caused by several hours of continuous rains. The flash flood occurred around 11 p.m. after the Pangi River overflowed due to heavy rains.

Typhoon “Mina” leaves 35 people dead, 37 injured and eight missing in parts of the Ilocos region, CAR, Central Luzon, the Bicol region, Iloilo, Zamboanga del Sur.

Typhoon “Pedring” brings strong winds and massive rains that flooded many areas when it made landfall in the northern Philippine province of Aurora, leaving 83 dead, 91 injured and 20 people missing. The typhoon also caused a storm surge with waves of nearly 10 feet that flooded Roxas Blvd. in Manila.
